* ALERT-Dog owners warned over sugar-free items

Keep those sugarless treats out of Fido's reach. Veterinarians warned on Friday that a commonly used sweetener might cause liver failure in dogs, and perhaps even kill them.

Their report in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association appears to strengthen the suspected link between the sugar substitute xylitol, thought to make dogs sick, and possible liver failure.

Xylitol, a naturally occurring product, is found in many sugar-free chewing gums, candies, baked goods and toothpastes.

Researchers Sharon Gwaltney-Brant and Eric Dunayer with staff at a poison unit of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Urbana, Illinois, gathered information on eight dogs treated between 2003 and 2005 after eating products containing xylitol.

Each dog became ill, and five died or had to be put down because of liver failure, possibly from ingesting xylitol.

One dog who had to be euthanized had eaten four large, chocolate-frosted muffins containing about 1 pound (0.45 kg) of xylitol.

"People don't think sugar-free gum can kill their dog. I didn't before I got into this. But this is something people should be aware of," Gwaltney-Brant, who co-authored the study with Dunayer, said in a statement.

Gwaltney-Brant said for dogs, ingesting even a small amount of xylitol can trigger significant insulin release, which drops their blood sugar and can be fatal.

"A 22-pound (10-kg) dog who consumes one gram (0.03 ounces) of xylitol should be treated," she said, adding that further studies were needed to definitely establish a cause-and-effect relationship.

How to Pick the Right Dog for your Family

How to Pick the Right Dog for your Family
By Gemma Dayanan

There are many kinds of dogs to choose from. Vital things to take into consideration are your lifestyle, your hobbies and your present and future situation. You have to take into account the distinction between raising a dog from young pup hood and getting it as an adult dog.

Do you want a pet or a show dog or a male or a female dog? What are the benefits in having a small dog? They may not need a large space but small dogs still need room to exercise. Think about whether you would like a crossbreed, or a purebred. Always, carefully check out the breeder or any other place where you are considering getting your new dog.

Should I get a puppy or an adult?

The best benefit in getting an adult dog is that it is probably potty trained. Also you won’t have any surprises as to its final size and personality. Though the adult dog may get along very well with you it may have unknown behavioral issues such as an aversion to children. If you decide on acquiring an adult dog, try a couple of tests to be sure of its disposition and personality. Study the dog’s conduct as you get close to it. Try walking it near another dog, near a child that the dog has never met before and see how it reacts.

Puppies still have a lot to learn and are easily influenced and impressionable. Though still young each and every puppy has its own distinctive personality. Once the puppies are a few weeks old you will surely see the behavioral differences between them. The shy ones stay close to their mothers or hid in corners, while the more sociable puppy will go right over to you and want to play.

Should I choose a male or a female?

Some of the major differences in the comportment between male and female dogs are quite evident. Males tend to be more dominant with their owners and often exhibit hostile behavior towards other dogs. They are more energetic and will do more to guard their territories. Male dogs are inclined to urinate to mark their territories and to wander. They are usually more playful, more destructive and sometimes do not get along with children.

In contrast, obedience and house training of females is much easier. They also want more affection and attention from their owners. They are usually in heat twice a year this comes with some blood– tinged discharges that last around one week

You will see no difference between male and female dogs in the way they bark whether it is nervous barking, defensive barking or just being plain excited. Neutering or spaying your dog will diminish and even remove many of these behavioral differences.

The dog you choose will be more than a pet. It will also be a member of your family. We have looked at many things to take into consideration when selecting a dog. Don’t pick the first dog you see, think and choose carefully so that you and your dog will be happy.

Lost Dog to Loud Noises?

The 4th of July fireworks shows scare many dogs and cats to the point where they bolt from their beloved home. My dog got scared by the unexpected sound of neighborhood fireworks the other night and attempted to run out the front door. Each year dogs go missing not only because of fireworks but loud thunderstorms also. After searching your neighborhood, check out your local animal shelters.

Dog dials 911, saving owner!

Another great story of a bright well trained dog saving a human life. A little beagle named Belle was specially trained to sniff around for abnormal blood-sugar levels in her owner Kevin Weaver. Weaver collapsed as a result of a seizure and was also unconscious. Thats's when wonder dog Belle chomped down on the number 9 on the keypad which had been programmed too dial 911. She had been trained to do this of course and the doctor told Weaver he probably would've died without help from loyal and smart girl Belle. Belle is already receiving accolades!

Some Dog Owners Need to be More Responsible

Too many dog owners are careless when it comes to letting their dogs run loose. Many a mail carrier and meter reader have been attacked and bitten. Dog owners who let their aggressive dogs run loose and who go on to bite or attack people are at risk for serious lawsuits including those by mail carriers. Known aggressive dogs should always be constrained by chain, door or fence.

As of early June people in Queens claim they are seeing Vivi the Wayward Whippet running around different parks in that area. They have a team looking for her and handing out flyers and puttng up posters on her behalf. Homeowners and Renters Dropped by Insurance Companies

Homeowners and renters who own certain breeds of dogs are being dropped by Insurance companies like Allstate and Farmers. They are refusing to write homeowners' policies for the following breeds:
Chows, Dobermans, American Pit Bulls, Alaskan Malamutes, Huskys, Akitas, and German Shepards. Other breeds are also included on the "vicious breed" list.

Homeowners and renters are fighting back-nine states have bills pending that would prevent insurance companies from banning dog owners their right to be covered just because they own a certain breed of dog!

Dog owners are righteously complaining that their beloved family pet may be on the "vicious breed" list but their dog is a sweet natured member of the family who wouldn't hurt anyone.

This clearly is discrimination based on fear and ignorance. Shame on the insurance companies practicing this rediculous policy of judge and convict first, explain later.

Puppies Die in Heated Car

Editor Pat: This is a good time to remind everyone that it's Never a good idea to leave pets inside your vehicle during summertime. The interior of your vehicle heats up fast and gets much too hot for dogs and cats. Even if you "crack" the window a couple of inches-that is not enough to keep the vehicle cool enough for pets. Many dogs have suffered and died in vehicles as a result of ignorance and vets tell us it's a cruel way to die.

Here's good advice: Don't take your dogs in vehicles during summer heat unless the pet will be removed immediately from the vehicle such as going for a walk. And even during a walk, provide plenty of shady rest and water for your dog. Do Not Jog with your dog either!! I've seen lots of ignorant people forcing their dog to "jog" with them. Dogs don't jog in the wild, they walk, trot, and run at high speed when they need to. They don't run in the hot sun for exercise, it's not natural for them to do this so don't force your dog to jog! Wake up!

On the other hand, don't position your pet right in front of an air conditioner either. When I was a kid, my father put our Boxer right in front of the air conditioner as we drove to and from Palm Springs. Within a few days our Boxer had pneumonia. The vet said it was from the air conditioner.

Here's another tragic story of puppies dying in a heated car and by the way, the woman who did this was arrested!:

Go Natural and Holistic!

I bring my dog to an "holistic" veteranarian named Dr. Smatt. He is top notch in his treatment of my Havanese dog and the methods he uses to treat any problem. Holistic vets are free to use alternative methods and therapies to treat our pets. They've been educated and trained in traditional and alternative or holistic vet medicine. My vet has used Chinese herbs for example to counteract the effects of a vaccine. The traditional vet ain't going to do that. My dog has been treated with respect and her immune system is all the better for it. She hasn't been exposted to shots that weren't necessary. There aren't enough holistic vets around but it there is one in your area, and has a good reputation, try them out and you'll probably never regret it.

Could a Golden Retriever be the Right Dog Breed for You?

Could a Golden Retriever be the Right Dog Breed for You?
Andy Matthews

Intelligent, and keen to learn, they were originally bred to retrieve game, but they have readily adapted to new roles as guide dogs for the blind, drug detection work, and competing at the highest level in obedience. However, before you rush out and buy one of these charming and friendly dogs, you need to be sure that the Golden Retriever is the right choice of dog for you, and your family.

Owners of Golden's owe a debt to Lord Tweedmouth of England who first introduced them as a definite breed during the 19th century. Bred with a natural working ability, they were easily classified as members of the Sporting Group. This is a high energy dog, and is going to need plenty of brisk exercise, especially in the early years.

The Golden likes to keep busy. Retrieving a ball on your walks will help him to burn up most of his abundant energy. Keeping them occupied when they are young is important. Trust me, they will find ways to entertain themselves, such as demolishing every shoe you possess.

The Golden Retriever is a large, muscular dog, standing 22 to 24 inches tall, and weighing in at 55 to 80 pounds. They have kind eyes, and a broad head, which may offer a clue as to why they are so intelligent. Coats are quite dense, and colors range from a deep, honey colored gold to a light golden.

They are average shedders so frequent grooming is advisable if you don't want dog hair all over your furniture. To prevent mats from developing brush him through with a good bristle brush, paying particular attention to the area behind his ears.

Golden's will be okay in an apartment providing you exercise them frequently. They need a good daily romp in the park as well as walking on the lead. If your a keen gardener, fence off an area for your dog, as most Golden Retrievers also love gardening. While they are at the puppy stage, they love to dig, and also enjoy chewing up the shrubbery.

Goldens Retrievers are large dogs, and they like to eat. So this is an expense that you need to consider. Healthwise, they are prone to hip dysplasia, and can suffer from eye problems. Skin allergies are quite common, and you should consult your veterinarian straight away if you detect a problem.

This breed make excellent family dogs. They are friendly towards everyone, and kind and gentle with children. Golden puppies are naturally boisterous, and you could find that toddlers may accidentally get bowled over when your pup is playing.

Because they are eager to please their owners this breed is relatively easy to train. You can find a dog training method that works well with a Golden. And you could also arrange to attend obedience classes with him. This will help to socialize him, getting him used to other dogs and people. Training your Golden Retriever when he is a small puppy, is a much better idea, than waiting till he is a 70lb adult and a real handful to control. So is the Golden the right dog for you? There's no doubt that they make loyal and loving family pets, their huge popularity is testament to that. But, popularity can also bring with it its own problems.

A healthy, even tempered Golden Retriever is a real pleasure to own. So, if you've made your mind up to get one of these beautiful dogs, make sure that you choose a reputable breeder to buy your puppy from.

Doggie Humor

On the first day of creation, God created the dog.

On the second day, God created man to serve the dog.

On the third day, God created all the animals of the earth (especially the horse) to serve as potential food for the dog.

On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labour for the good of the dog.

On the fifth day, God created the tennis ball so that the dog might or might not retrieve it.

On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the dog healthy and the man broke.

On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but He had to walk the dog.

San Francisco Puppy Has "Dog Flu"

A puppy located in San Francisco has been diagnosed with "Dog Flu" by a lab in U.C. Davis. Why is that concerning? Because "Dog Flu" is contagious and dogs who have contracted have died. It's certainly nothing to panic about but common sense should come into play when and if you see your dog showing signs of an upper respiratory infection. This infection can manifest itself as a runny nose (nasal discharge) or persistant cough.

Dogs who share toys or dishes with other dogs are at risk of contracting this disease. And I'd be careful about taking your dog to dog related gatherings such as "dog parks" and the like. I know a lot of people love to take their dogs to these places but to be on the safe side, maybe this activity can be skipped till this disease passes, assuming it will.

Even though there's no vaccine for this condition, the good news is that dogs who have gotten this disease have recovered so it's not automatically fatal. Just use good judgement and keep an eye on your dog especially if it's a highly social dog and always around other canines.

The Blessing of Dogs

"There'd be a lot more than 50,000 names on the Vietnam Wall without these dogs, and I don't think the average American even knows the role they played." - Dr. John Kubisz, a veterinarian serving with the 764th Veterinary detachment in Vietnam.

Quote above taken from the site "War-Dogs.com./http://www.war-dogs.com/" What other animal on earth is more deliberately heroic than the dog? Dogs will kill to defend those they love and admire. They protect, defend, help, assist, guide, befriend, save, alert, their attributes go on and on.

Jewish tradition states that God blessed the canine race. During the "Exodus", thousands of people escaped Egypt and tradition states that not one dog barked during that dramatic exit.

Cadaver dogs Called Back Home to Maine

The Portland Press Herald is reporting that cadaver dogs have been called back home to Maine from searching through the terrible conditions still present in Louisiana. These brave and faithful duty-bound dogs have had to trudge through " a 4-inch blanket of gasoline, engine oil, sewage and industrial waste. " Otherwise known as "New Orleans goo", very toxic. The city has become "a rat factory" with large ugly rats everywhere especially in the abandoned homes. About 2300 people are still unaccounted for there.

The dogs and searchers were called back as the searchers weren't allowed back into their hotel rooms. They were told they couldn't get back in until they filled out papers requesting federal assistance! It's been months and months since this Katrina and there are still body parts "stewn all over the place." The recovery workers are not being given the proper resources to get the job done. "Vivi" the wayward Whippet is still on the loose, but according to psychics she is warm and somewhere among many buildings. Her California owners say psychics think she is hiding out on JFK's 5000 acre property somewhere. There is a $5000 reward for her return by one of her owners and the Westminster Kennel Club is paying for two search dogs to try and find her whereabouts.

Search Called Off for Whippet On The Lamb

The poor scared or frustrated Whippet who took off from JFK airport is still on the lamb and the search has been officially called off. Authorities are still keeping an eye out for the wayward Whippet known as "ViVi". Her California based owner is very concerned that the Whippet will not fare well in the colder weather. The dog has a microchip and was last seen wearing a little black sweater and collar.

Stay tuned for more of the "Wayward Whippet" news. Hopefully Vivi can be found happy and healthy and returned to her owners soon.

Westminster Whippet Missing-Owners Frantic

A whippet who competed in the Westminster dog show is missing and is thought or hoped to be in the surrounding area near JFK Airport. The dog won an award at the show "award of merit", but apparently that wasn't enough to keep the pooch happy and close to his owners. The California based owners are frantically trying to get their beloved whippet back. If you live near that area be on the lookout for a lost and scared whippet on the lamb!

And The Winner Is...

"Rufus" the colored Bull Terrier won the Westminster Dog Show yesterday. He came across as a poised calm and cool pro. Like the Pug, the Bull Terrier has one of those faces that you have to love because it's so unusual. Many of the finalists in the competition could've won best-in-show last night: the Golden Retriever, the Dalmation, the Scottish Deerhound, etc.. An overall good group of finalists this year.

The Terrier Group, my personal favorite, is the winningest dog group in the history of the competition, so it's really no surprise that another Terrier won again this year. There's just something about them that attracts humans to them despite their sometimes quirky behavior.

Here's "Rufus" in all his glory:

Tonight's Results

Sorry Pekingnese fans-maybe next year. Or the year after, maybe. :-D

The mighty and handsome Pug beat out the "also ran" Pekingese this year in the "Toy Group" I'm happy to announce! Good to have a fresh breed in that position.

In the "Non-Sporting" Group, the Dalmation won. This is a good looking, bright, charming and disciplined dog. I wouldn't be surprised to see this dog win Best In Show tomorrow.

The colored Bull Terrier won the "Terrier Group" tonight. There's nothing like a terrier. As a group they're my favorites. Entertaining, barky, territorial, charming, stubborn, smart, skilled, and these are just a few of their qualities. If you're looking for a dog and a half, get yourself a terrier! You'll be exasperated, proud, perplexed, entertained, and you'll never be bored.

The "Working" Group called out the Rottweiler to represent them in the finals this year. It's nice to see a breed like this in the finals. Most dogs are good and loving dogs if raised by a good and responsible person.

Tomorrow night's competition brings out the "Sporting", "Hound", and "Herding" groups. With the "Best In Show" featuring all the "best of group" winners finishing the night's competition.

The Westminster Begins!

The 130th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show begins tonight Feb. 13 and ends on the 14th. It begins on USA Network at 8pm. I never miss this show, it's one of the best entertainment offerings on tv.

I hope the spot in the finals that seems to be reserved for the "pekingese" goes to a different breed this year. A bedroom slipper with paws has a limited appeal to me. Of course I'm biased toward the Havanese as that's the breed of my dog. But, being a relatively new AKC breed, it'll be years and years before one of the little beauties makes the finals.

Animal Cop Heroes

If you want to experience sadness and anger watch "Animal Cops" on the "Animal Planet" network. The show follows "animal cops" as they go through their daily routine of helping/rescuing poor abused and neglected dogs. You have to be as tough as nails to do their job. It's amazing how sick some people are. They take out their infantile anger on their pets first. Their attitude is: abuse the dog and then I'll feel better. When doing a search on the word "puppies" the first results that come up almost always involve abuse. Puppies found dead, puppies abused, puppies abandoned, etc. How society treats it's most helpless beings (human and animal) is an indication of how healthy or sick it is. We seem to be on the decline in many areas.

The Great Pleasure of A Dog.....

Follow Up: Manufacturer of Toxic Dog Food Admits...

Diamond Pet Foods has admitted that their workers did not follow proper testing procedures. Twelve shipments of corn were tainted with a deadly fungus and it was found that there were no records of testing these shipments. Dozens of pet dogs died as a result of eating the toxic food.

Can Pets, Specifically Dogs Improve Your Health?

The online “Science Daily” focuses on how pets (dogs) act as a catalyst in our lives. They act as “social catalysts, causing us to take action we might not have taken. Your dog needs to be walked, mine certainly loves it, during a walk we might strike up conversations with others. The act of walking the dog gives us exercise that our bodies desperately need as well as possible social interaction.

One study found that people who regularly walk their dogs were more likely to survive one year after a heart attack than cat owners or non-pet people. Also findings indicate that owning a pet can emulate a close emotional relationship with another person. Therefore, reducing stress and anxiety. A problem arises among the elderly who are so close to their pet that they sometimes refuse to get medical examinations and treatments thinking that will mean the end to their relationship with their pet.

The bottom line is people value their relationship with their pets as because they make an important contribution to their lives.

Extensive Training For Service Dog

A fifteen year old girl who has cerebral palsy is benefiting from a “service dog” that she is being trained to work with. The dog “Precious” is being trained to help the girl when nobody else is around to help her. Tasks such as opening a dresser drawer, handing money to a cashier, and so forth. The girl and dog must be trained in how to interact with each other. The dog needs two years of formal training and the cost ($25k) is being picked up by a non-profit dog training center and the girl’s classmates.

Tainted Food-Over 100 Dogs Dead

There is a story in the New York Post about dogs that have died as a result of eating tainted food. The brands in question are “Diamond, Country Value, and Professional”. Vets at Cornell Univers. believe that over 100 dogs have died as a result of eating these foods that contain “aflatoxin” that injures the livers of dogs. Diamond Pet Food has recalled varieties of their foods. If you feed your dog or know someone who feeds their dog these foods contact them and alert them to stop.

Pro vs. Backyard Breeders

Check out this site not only for breeders of dogs but their checklist regarding how to evaluate a breeder has useful tips also. Be on the lookout for “backyard breeders”. These are people who get a purebread dog and mate them with another supposedly purebread. These people aren’t pros so they don’t necessarily know what they’re doing. Will backyard breeders know what health and behavior problems plague their breed? If not and you buy a pup from them to save a few bucks, you could spend a lot more in vet bills when you find out your dog needs expensive treatment for genetic diseases. Stay with known pro breeders. You’ll just have to be patient and wait for your future pup to be born if none are available. A healthy puppy from a pro breeder is worth the wait.

Dog Fans Rejoice! The Dog Zone is Here...

Welcome To The Dog Zone!

This blog will be about dogs. The good, the bad, and the mysterious. Dogs are wonderful and exasperating at the same time. They probably think the same about us! They are full of life, love and forgiveness. Humans and dogs are meant to be together, they are a blessing.

We’ll also explore the marketplace built around dogs and their owners. It’s filled with both useful and rediculous items and fun to sort through. We’ll look at health issues, recreation, travel, service dogs, and anything else of value to dogs and their owners. The “Dog World” is varied, exciting and fun.

There’s a little knick knack I have in my home that says “Home is Where The Dog Is”. That’s a good thought to end this post.
